Current training:

Coaching has taken his full time and attention and has removed his personal motivation to train. He still plans on, in the near future, training for the 50 mile (to break the father-son 50 mile record) and to qualify to compete for team USA at the World 100k Championships. Joel currently averages 1hr a day of running.

The 10 weeks prior to Joel's winning the Birch Bay Marathon: (# is miles that week) Training began after finally recovering from pneumonia.

Key workouts: Lydiard hill bounding 3 times per week. Long runs of 2 hours 30 minutes. 8 x 1600 in 5:20, 1 minute rest. 10 x 200 in 32. 3k indoor race.

Key workouts: 4 miles every AM. Lots of 8 mile up beat runs. 2 x 1600 in 4:49. Oregon Drills. High School track competitions. Hill repeats and the last two workouts being 2 x 800 in 2:13 / 2:11 and a 3rd place finish in the 1600 (4:40.2 with a 62 second last lap) in the Northwest League Championships.
